This sculpture is based on a true story of a bald eagle that was found caught in a trap. According to the woman who found the bird, it was alive and looking at her, and she spent an hour freeing it, and carried it out to get help. The bird had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. The woman was then cited for hindering legal trapping, and faced a fine and jail time. While the charges were later dropped by the state of Alaska, the event remains a commentary on morality and compassion versus ‘the law,’ and the delicate balance between freedom and the forces that threaten it. The artwork invites viewers to reflect on the impact of human actions on the natural world, and the ideals the eagle represents.
