bearing witness
Victims encountered during my commute and travels in NC led me to contemplate the relationship between humanity and nature. A death mask was traditionally a plaster cast made from the face of the deceased as a way to memorialize the dead. I gravitated toward the death mask as my medium to memorialize and honor the animals depicted, and to elevate them from roadkill to beings worthy of our contemplation and respect. The tire fragments act as abstract sculptural elements, as well as tangible reminders of the cause of their deaths. We become desensitized, and my hope is to encourage the viewer to see with new eyes, and also promote the importance of solutions, such as wildlife crossings, and habitat and biodiversity conservation.
